Using a 12Gb drive on an array with a 6Gb backplane

Are you still running an older SAN array with a 6Gb backplane? If so and you intend to keep that array in service, do you have a plan in place to replace drives as they fail, knowing that 6Gb drives are difficult to source and 12Gb drives are not natively compatible with the old backplane?

One option is to utilize a 6Gb-12Gb adapter card between the drive and the backplane. Simply install the adapter on the back of the drive tray and you can now add a 12Gb drive to the system. There is no need to power down the entire array nor do you need to replace the actual backplane.
